Cab Main Event

The Theme

“Imagining Peace” will be a four-day event and will include a collection of artists from different schools and of different thoughts. We have selected and obtained enthusiastic commitment from fortyleading Sri Lanka’s leading artists along with ten highly esteemed international artists who will be working around this challenging act of “imagining” the highly evasive concept of “peace”.

Location

Colombo Art Biennale 2009 is taking place in the centre of Colombo.  The location for the first Colombo Art Biennale isPark Street Mews, a phenomenal space with 5 large warehouses comprising over 13,000 sq ft.

Pavilions

Five large warehouses will be converted into five distinctive Biennale Pavilions each managed by a strong curator showcasing a different artist collective. Many artists will be working collaboratively. CAB is not only about showcasing Sri Lankan art it is a project with a vision. This is to show that despite the fact that Sri Lanka has been a politically, ethnically polarized society, artists still can and will continue to work together in pursuit of harmony, a sign of peace in itself.

Six curators are working with the artists to create the Imagination of Peace within the space.  The pavilions themselves being large and spacious give ample room for almost limitless creativity to showcase this manifestation of contemporary art in the form of not only paintings but also in the form of installation art that promises to be imaginative, surprising, thought provoking and interactive. This will be further enhancedby certain artists who will be seen performing around the installation pieces.
